Notes

There are a few official Bruce Springsteen compilations out there, and they all seem to miss the mark in terms of presenting a true "best of" what Bruce Springsteen has to offer. The first Greatest Hits (from 1995) is almost laughable as it seems that whoever compiled it had forgotten that Bruce actually released music prior to 1975. The Essential Bruce Springsteen (from 2003) was a better attempt, but with just two discs (not including the "rarities" disc), it still seemed to come up a bit short. Plus the man was hardly in a position to be compiled in a career retrospective as he just kept releasing albums at a pace that was previously unknown to the man...

At the end of 2014, with the conclusion of the Wrecking Ball-High Hopes tours and the release of remastered versions of his first seven albums, the time seemed right to have a sprawling look back at the best of what Bruce released. As this is four CDs, it allowed an opportunity to stretch into obscure corners to include great tracks that might not be well-known to the average fan, but still worthy of inclusion. Songs like "Trapped", "I Wanna Be With You", "Code Of Silence", and (especially) "Lift Me Up" are all quite deserving to be included on any list of Bruce's greatest tracks. For the discerning collector, special care was taken to include tough to find versions of tracks that sweeten the deal. For instance, the single version of "War" (still unavailable on an official CD) was used, as was the original single version of "Jersey Girl" with spoken intro and lacking overdubs later added for inclusion on 'Live 1975-1985'. Speaking of lacking overdubs, the original, single mix of "Shut Out The Light" (without the Soozie Tyrell overdubs found on 'Tracks') is here along with the "Winter Mix" of "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" (with a longer fade). And there also is what might be an experimental promo-edit for the 'Plugged' version of "Light Of Day" back when it was being considered for release as a single. It's all here and it goes right on through to his latest release - American Beauty (from Record Store Day 2014). Everything is presented in the best sound quality available. And, unlike so many artists that have been around as long as Bruce, the last disc (featuring his most recent material) is as strong and as enjoyable listen as any of the others in the set, proving that the man is still as inspired and gifted an artist as he ever was. It's incredible to consider the body of work that Bruce has given us so far, but this 4-CD set is one hell of a "Cliffs Notes" encapsulation!
