Congrats Dave+Co......"Exsleeper",PTA, SOTU, DeMa..were all boring or even small disasters... this here "Spirit" is the best of the bunch of post-Ultra phase - does perhaps not mean so much considering how few tracks grabbed me from the named albums :( Also the sound quality/mastering is better again.

This pressing is infuriating. Mixing is great. But I have listened to three copies, and all of them have short bursts of non fill on side B in the left channel, in the same places. Tried with three very different cartridges and turntables, and the result is always the same. Didn't anyone listen to the test pressing with headphones before giving it an OK?

Superb pressing a bit of a return to pure electronics. 'Where's The Revolution' is Mode's strongest anthem in years and the political themes running through most of the tracks give the album a sense of purpose which was perhaps missing from the Hillier produced releases.

Go get this album immediately. Beautiful music by Depeche Mode in a gorgeous package. Sound quality is EXCELLENT. Not a single pop or crack throughout all the album. I am amazed.

I had to return it to the store two times because of a damaged vinyl.Having that sorted out it's a high quality pressing even if the album itself is not the best in DM discography.Make no mistake - it's not weak either ;)

Mine is slightly warped too but that doesn't affect the sound so I let it be. Disk 1 had a grey stain on it though. It was visible under a strong light and it also gave out a hissing sound when the stylus ran through it.Looked like a pressing issue.

In what way was the vinyl damaged? I returned my vinyl once, too because Disk 2 has been warped. The copy I got then had the same issue, so I kept it.

To early to judge the album compered to the former albums. This album sounds mature. Maybe it lacks a bit edge and spirituell youth. Nothing new, like they recycled something from every former album. To safe...Thought it's cool dark, heavy and hard. It has the same atmosphere as Black Celebration.David's voice is strong as always and Martin makes his well known fragile and emotional vibratos.I'm not sure... no final verdict jet. But still it's DM and it's pretty good. The musical quality all through the album is high.

ATTN: Anyone stopping by hoping to gleam what the album sounds like based off of Discogs Genre/Style tags - this is not "synth-pop"."Spirit" on a first listen digs its heels into the overarching sound of the last three releases - 'loudness war' lack of nuance in mixing/mastering, more guitars, live drumming, analogue/sawtooth synthesizers, abandonment of traditional pop structure. While DM have had songs in the style of "synth-pop" in the last 12 years ("Suffer Well" "Fragile Tension"), there is none of that here. "Spirit" has more in common stylistically to "Land of Rape and Honey"-era Ministry than "Black Celebration" (or any key synth-pop release by the band). Depeche Mode have abandoned pop music structures - this album weighs heavily toward Rock than Electronic music, with Industrial (or, Post-Industrial if it were an option) and EBM as styles. There's even more of a post-punk influence (track 9, "So Much Love") than 'synth-pop'.Don't expect a "See You", "People are People". Actually, if you've been paying attention since SOFAD, DM haven't been trying to make synth-pop for a long time.Discogs community - can we finally let go of this idea that Depeche Mode still makes synth-pop? Please? It's tiring. Bands and musicians change over time. If Kraftwerk abandoned synthesizers and hired an orchestra to play their next album, it wouldn't be electronic music, either.Curious what synth-pop sounds like? Listen to early-DM, try on Yellow Magic Orchestra, or listen to something more recent, like Chvrches, La Roux, or last year's wonderful, inspired synth-pop album "Oh No" by Jessy Lanza.

I agree with your point on the last 3 or so albums. They seem to Let Me Down, again and again. Some ok songs, but nothing that drew you to the albums as a whole. The first time I heard Spirit, I thought it was ok, then I sat down in my living room and listened to the entire lp on my thumping system. I also had the lyrics to read through. The album grabbed me and I felt like I did when I listened to SGR, or MFTM. There are subtle hints of old on this release. Give it a thorough listen on your home system and see if it doesn't pull you in, especially 4, 5 and 6. You have to dig in a bit!Also, their music has matured, like Sting, Peter Gabriel, etc...had. You're not going to hear multi-layered synthesized pop songs from them anymore. As many have stated: you either like it, or you don't.

you absolutely made a point that DM have abandoned their synth-pop music trademark. It's absolutely understandable for a band making music for so many years to develop new ideas and change their musical style. On the other hand, though being a fan for 20 years, I lost touch with the change being made over the last few records. When I started listening to DM, just with the release of ULTRA, I was deeply moved by their tone and musical style. I started to acquire the whole discography of the band, liking their 80ies sound very much. They tried to become a rock band with SOFAD but in my opinion their sound was still unmistakable. ULTRA reduced the rock influences mixing electronic pop with guitars. Though some fans found ULTRA mediocre - actually there are some weaker songs on it - it was a record with a distinct DM sound. Tom me, Exciter was an absolute letdown, Playing the Angel and Sounds of the Universe had their moments (Suffer Well, Fragile Tension). I found absolutely no connection to Delta Machine. Spirit seems to go the same way abandoning rhythmic drums and synthesizer sounds. As I said before, I accept the bands wish to change their musical horizon but I'm less than enthusiastic about it. Seems like DM is finally leaving my musical horizon. Sad but no catastrophe as all the classics still shine!

Too early to call, but my initial impressions are not favourable. I've been listening to the much maligned Sounds of the universe and Delta machine albums a great deal recently; Have come to the the conclusion SOTU is a very fine album for the most part and Delta machine is probably in my top 3 DM albums. Ben Hillier, the producer of both of those records and the previous Playing the angel (they've become my go to DM albums of late), came in for a lot of criticism, but I think that with time, opinions will start to change and that he'll receive the praise he deserves. The fact that the band stuck with him for 3 albums surely suggests that they rated him highly. As I say, I'm not prepared to nail my colours to the mast just yet, but James Ford's production on spirit strikes me as being strangely underwhelming; or is it the quality of the songs themselves that are below par? Personally, I'd like the band to take a chance with their next producer, that is, if Martin Gore is unwilling, or feels unable to produce DM himself. Johnny Greenwood, if they could get him might be interesting. Likewise, Scott Walker or John Cale. 2 people I suspect (possibly totally incorrectly) have never taken any interest in Depeche Mode.
