Notes
Producer: Benkadi e.V. & National Museum of Mali (m n m).Documentation team: Mme Touré Fatou Sacko, Bilangalama Sissoko & Jean-Pierre Dougnon.
In 1989, the National Museum of Mali initiated a project entitled "Study and Collection of Malian Musical Heritage." In this project, nine field research projects were funded by the Federal Foreign Office in the first five years and started in 1991 in cooperation with the International Institute for Traditional Music / Berlin. Two field research projects in the north of the country supported the Mali Nord program of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). In January 1994, the team was able to conduct field research at Dogon in Bandiagara, Koro and Bankass districts.
In total, seventeen musical genres were recorded in ten villages, mainly from the popular music repertoire. Some songs belong to the ritual and funeral music, which is usually tied to a fixed ritual calendar. The villagers themselves chose which musical genre best represents their village in the documentary.
