OK all you techno afficianados, you like techno do ya? Well maybe it wouldn't hurt you to go back in time a few years and open up your mind to some of the pioneering innovations of the genre before we even started calling this electronic music techno. Case in point, "Love Is A Stranger"/"Monkey Monkey" - One side was a house track (well, sort of) that embodies all of the elements of techno music and the other is a breakbeat breakthrough that highlighted the famous 606/808 drum sound backed by a 101 doing the bassline. "Love Is A Stranger" is the "housy" one. Annie Lennox's voice doesn't carry the song or anything (the music does that, too), it propels it into the stratosphere! Sweet and at once powerful, I find it invigorating (and VERY sexy!), and the music defies any of my comparatively weak words. You just have to hear it and try to open your mind to what I'm trying to say. "Monkey Monkey" is the "breakbeat" kind of thing here and you just have to hear it to know how innovative it was back in 1983. The genre of techno familiarized us with some of the electronic production tricks but Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox pioneered the way with these tricks. Check this stuff out! And try to realize just how ahead of its time it really was!
