For quite a long time, Kremer's version was my favourite recording of the Sibelius concerto. When I first heard Gitlis', I was absolutely blown away, and I can assure you that more than 30 years of listening to violin recordings (and more than 20 years of playing violin in my youth) have made me very hard to impress. I own a couple of recordings of the Sibelius concerto and have heard even more. This is my absolute favourite, in my opinion even superior to Oistrach and Julian Sitkovetsky. This would be one of my top picks from my vast collection of violin recordings.

Gitlis' narrative qualities match perfectly with the requirements of this rhapsodic masterpiece. Even more than Kremer, Gitlis is known to be unafraid of harsh tones to tell his story, which is definitely not appreciated by everyone (if you want it nice and sweet, turn to Perlman - technically perfect, bot almost boring and already outdated in his approach) but is perfectly fitting for the strange and at times rough beauty of the music.

By the way: The Bartok is also fantastic - as all of Gitlis' recordings of 20th century music I have heard.
