Completely and utterly spellbinding stuff. Had heard a couple of tracks via a Best Of 2013 playlist from my brother before deciding to dive into the album proper. OH MY GOD, this is seriously special. Breathtakingly sad and uplifting in equal measure. Had to really work hard not to burst into tears on the tube in London on my commute to and from work. That's never been a problem for me before in 20 years of commuting! Buy this album so these guys gets some royalties. Don't just stream it or get it from peer-to-peer sites. Never have two men earned it more in 2013. An album to fall completely head over heels in love with. Only beaten by Nick Cave' and The Bad Seeds's 'Push The Sky Away' to best album of 2013 in my book.

Someone has got to say something about this album. First, I have to thank Ivo Watts-Russell who has long championed the music of Mark Kozelek from signing him at the beginning of his career at 4AD. Ivo kept telling me this album was getting heavy, daily rotation for months in his home. I put off buying a little while since I figured it would be what I would expect, which would be more than fine. However, I was wrong. Teaming up with Jimmy Lavelle of The Album Leaf was a stroke of genius. This album is intoxicating and profound, personal and beyond beautiful. Replacing the acoustic guitars with vintage analog synths adds a dimension to the music that is hard to describe. It chokes me up. Right now I can't imagine an album I will love more this year.
