Notes

The songwriter credits on the record label contain some likely errors. "Kamalani O Keaukaha" is listed as traditional, when in fact Lena Machado wrote it to thank the people of Keaukaha ocean-side of Hilo for their hospitality. "Puu O Hulu" is more often called "Kaula Ili," and is credited to Eliza Ha‘aheo on the huapala.org web site and credited to "Ha‘aheo" on the CD reissue of this album in 2005. I have no idea of the identities of "Woolsey" and "Sauer" nor why they are credited as songwriters. Chillingworth is Sonny Chillingworth. "Kaula Ili" was one of his signature songs for which he created unique arrangements. Likewise, I have no idea about K. Furatado who is cited as a co-writer for "Na Pua Ka Ilima." This is also a probable misspelling, since there are many people in Hawai‘i with the last name of Furtado, but few if any with the last name of Furatado. The CD deletes K. Furatado.

Akta
A simple but beautiful combination is a soprano voice accompanied by a single guitar. "Na Pua Ka Ilima" (often called "Na Pua Lei Ilima") fits this perfectly as Melveen Leed is the soprano and Ledward Kaapana provides the guitar "voice." Other songs in this collection may be a bit over-produced with strings almost drowning out the best of slack key provided with three songs each from Ledward Kaapana, Gabby Pahinui, Sonny Chillingworth, and Atta Isaccs. Still this is a wonderful album that grows with each listening. For many years, it was out of print, but the CD version that came out in 2005 remains in print and available from the mele.com web site and other web sites.
