The massive (in Australia) hit "The Real Thing" is a brilliant anomaly: an urgent, bubblegum-psychedelic anthem unlike anything else I know of. It was produced by Australian rock personality Ian "Molly" Meldrum with a glorious lack of restraint and submerged in phasing, sound effects, "oo-mow-mow-mow-mow" babble, a choir, and the kitchen sink. (Alright, "Hey Jude" crossed with "I Am The Walrus" if you pushed me.)

The rest of disc 1 is exquisitely crafted early 70's pop, sung in a fragile, breathy voice, perhaps slightly over-earnest if you hear it first as a cynical adult, but always gorgeous. David Cassidy? Cat Stevens? You forget how good pop like this is, until you hear it again.

This compilation contains all the tracks from his only album of that vintage, "Bloodstone", plus surrounding singles. Disc 2 covers his later career as an Oz Rock icon.
