Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus FLAC album

When I was a poor boy (I've been a poor boy for most of my miserable life), I was looking for an unexpensive substitute for the most expensive Prestige original and I came across two early international versions, a Danish Metronome copy and this release pressed by Victor of Japan (no, not actually RCA Victor...). The most prominent difference: the Danish version has been pressed from a US mother, the Japanese version has been cut from a Prestige master tape copy. In the meanwhile I bought the first pressing and I'm able to compare all of them by now: if you intend to buy one of these, I would strongly recommend the above version (which has been pressed in 1959, by the way).

Hi Leo, sorry for the delay, I forgot to click the notification button. As I've written in my comment I own a first press Prestige by now and although it's an Abbey pressing, I'm not convinced and I suppose that the 1958 Bergenfield copies won't sound better. I bought the Analogue Productions release a while ago, but I'm hesitating to compare old copies and new editions with each other, as I use different tts and cartridges and it's not easy to find out, if either the quality of the pressing or the respective cartridges caused the differences. All of the above mentioned releases have been graded using an Orthofon 28µ spherical stylus. I listened to the AP RI using a modern Grado Platinum from the late Nineties and I wasn't convinced by the sound, but I'm biased, as I usually prefer contemporary issues. Best: Mark.
