At first glance, Spoon a typical American guitar strap. Founded in the early 1990s, the era for contrarian Americans with distorted guitars, the band grew to become a respected member of the renowned indierocklabel Merge. According to the site Metacritic, which calculates an average from all kinds of reviews, was Spoon the best band discussed of the noughties. Since then, the Texans also praised to the skies Transference (2010) four years later and are good for, because They Want My Soul is once again very strong. What stands out to their eighth record is that they are not merely focus on melodies and chord progressions, but also on rhythms. In addition to the raw throat of singer Britt Daniel is the groove yet the main seasoning. The drums, bass and rhythm guitar overshadow the already existing hardly lead guitars and synthesizers. The numbers are groovy, but not funky and have thus a very own way to uplift the listener. It underlines once again that Spoon not just a guitar strap is.
