Recorded at Trident Studios, London July 31 / August 1, 1969; except "Afterwards" & "Necromancer", recorded in one afternoon in January 1969 at Marquee Studios, London.

There are 2 versions of the USA Mercury release.
The different versions have matrix numbers as follows (seen near the run out groove):
1) Squid One stock copy (orange label) SR 61238 BM2
2) Necromancer stock copy (orange label) SR 61238 BM5

The back cover mentions tracks "Giant Squid" and "Into A Game Pt. II", but these are not on the release.
The back cover mentions track "Aersol Grey Machine" instead "Aerosol Grey Machine"

Bought this used, is there any difference at all between the 1999 and 2009 reissues other than a sticker barcode?
How can I tell which version I have as there is no sticker because there's no shrink-wrap..?

Although Van Der Graaf are of course highly regarded in general, this is still an enormously underrated record. Often considered a rudimentary version of their later releases in reviews, I think this is the best they did (I am no proghead). This is one of the most strange records of its time. It definitely has strong psych influences but creates an atmosphere which is unlike all other records I know. It is perhaps a greater kiss of death to the swinging sixties than many of the classics in this field (Stooges, Black Sabbath...). I wish they would have used the mega rare UK cover on which a mysterious woman is spraypainting the colourful landscape in monochrome silver and black. No wonder many 80s hipster heads consider them as the only listenable band of this era.If any record defines the term 'bleak', it is this. Nevertheless, it is full of creativity and defines the label 'progressive' so much more than most of the highly regarded albums of the genre. Very unique and forward thinking stuff that beams you in a parallel world if you play it in the right frame of mind. Should be checked out by a lot more people who do not like the 'classics' by this band.

I have an original red-label US Mercury pressing (purchased still-sealed in 1979) that has the identical track list as the 1974 Vertigo releases, including "Necromancer," so there must be at least two stock variants of this US title.

I reckon the info in Notes is incorrect. "Giant Squid" is on this release as track B4 instead of "Necromancer". I aquired TAGM as a second hand US import back in the early 70´s after hearing "Necromancer" on the radio. ...was annoyed to find that although the 3:30 track was listed, a slightly shorter 2 line song (`I wish that you would set me free...´), that i believe to be "Giant Squid" was in it´s place. I now have the Italian release on Vertigo (swirl) that i´m delighted to say does include "Necromancer" as track B4.
