Worth bearing in mind this double vinyl edition lets the tracks breathe more than the original single vinyl version did, with the final three songs of the album now on side 3. This might irritate the purist, but the bottom line is the album sounds great throughout. As a bonus, the packaging has nice spot UV effects on the pictures inside and on the cover.

squeezing the last drop of milk from this dried up beast lying on the side of the road - Rhino Entertainment Company reissue yet another remaster with the second lp full of cutting floor rejects that should have been left on the floor. there is a reason jeff changed musical direction after this release AND after pulling the wilco tour van over to the side of the road when the band first heard Son Volt - Trace in the vans cassette player. the realization that wilco - the band - could/would never match the brilliance of TRACE or the musical direction of Jay Farrar. for completest tobesure but i'll pass and spend my money on something good and not rehashed yet again with extra creme filling that is "way past" the due date

A.M. is an introduction and a first step. I have never heard Trace. I have no intention to ever hear it. Wilco has grown and every album brings something new. You can keep listening to Trace as I stay intrigued, fascinated and happy listening to each new Wilco chapter.

Voodoogore

Someday someone will write a review of AM where AM is judged on its own merits instead of compared to Trace. Someday. There ought to be a word for refusing to take a work on its own merit and instead comparing it to the work of former collaborators. I'd suggest "Postcarded" would serve this purpose. Trace is a wonderful record. AM is a very good record. I've yet to see a review of a Phil Collins record that compares him to Peter Gabriel. I wonder why.

The Celebration Rock podcast has a great interview with Tweedy and Stirratt about AM and Being There. Tweedy admits that AM was him just continuing to write the type of songs he wrote in Tupelo for AM that were there to compliment Jay's songs. Sure, Son Volt won the first round with Trace, but Wilco knocked them out cold with Being There and Son Volt is still passed out on the mat. Tweedy understands the beauty in collaboration and experimentation, Jay Farrar never has. He tried to rule Uncle Tupelo with an iron fist and that is one of the reasons why they are no more. Still, I have to agree with you, Trace is a stunner.A.M., has grown on me through the years and, for me, it does have a certain charm that is missing on later Wilco releases.
